Grand Ritual of the Thirteen-Deity Vajrabhairava (Yamantaka), with the Peaceful Fire Offering Ritual and the Naga Ritual
Each year, during the sacred three-month monsoon retreat, the monks of Sed-Gyued Institute of Buddhist Studies perform the Grand Ritual of the Thirteen-Deity Vajrabhairava, also known as Yamantaka. Upon the completion of the associated coloured-sand mandala, this year's Grand Ritual is held from 28 to 31 August 2026, and includes the accompanying Peaceful Fire Offering Ritual (Shiwe Jinsek) and the Naga Ritual on the final day.
Vajrabhairava is the wrathful aspect of Manjushri, the embodiment of the wisdom of all the Buddhas. This profound tantric practice is performed to clear obstacles, pacify harm and illness, purify negativity, and bring protection and long life to all who are connected with it.
Throughout the days of the ritual the monastic sangha is sustained entirely by the kindness of sponsors. You are welcome to make an offering towards the mandala and ritual materials, the fire offering materials, the daily meals, tea and refreshments for the monks, or a cash offering to the sangha. Every offering, of any size, is included in the dedication of merit at the close of the ritual.
