Sojong, meaning “restoring and purifying,” is a bimonthly ritual where monks and nuns confess any breaches of vows and renew their moral discipline. It purifies the mind, strengthens ethical conduct, and revitalizes spiritual commitment.
Summer Retreat (Varshika) is a three-month period, traditionally observed during the rainy season, when monastics stay in one place to focus intensely on study, meditation, and ethical discipline. It originated with the Buddha to avoid harming insects and crops during travel.
Benefits of these practices include purification of karma, deepened mindfulness, spiritual renewal, accumulation of merit, and stronger community harmony. They are essential for sustaining the monastic path and advancing on the journey to enlightenment.
